Here's the latest dosing information for Potassium Iodate (brand name Iosat) for prevention of radioactive iodine uptake by the body in the event of a nuclear release accident, or intentional detonation of an atomic or nuclear warhead.

RR
---------------------------------------------
200 Tablets 85 MG each Tablet

Use during a Nuclear Emergency—ONLY! Best if started at least 12 hours before Fallout!

Humans-

Adults, and Children over 12 years of age:
Take: 2 tablets per day for 15 days (minimum) to 85 days

Children 3 years to 12 years:
Take: 1 tablet per day for 15 days (minimum) to 85 days

Babies 1 month to 3 years:
Take: ½ tablet per day for 15 days (minimum) to 85 days

Newborns to 1 month:
Take: ¼ tablet per day for 15 days (minimum) to 85 days

Warnings:

Only about 1-in-2,000,000 people are allergic to Iodine. If a rash appears you may be only "mildly" allergic and will have to make a decision as to which is worse -- radiation or a rash.

Remember: Children are extremely susceptible to Radiation. They come first—always!

Pets-

Large Dog: Give 1-2 tablets per day for 15 days (minimum) to 85 days

Medium Dog: Give--1/2 to 1 tablet per day for 15 days (minimum) to 85 days

Cats: Give--1/4 to --1/2 tablet per day for 15 days (minimum) to 85 days

Something I am wondering about:Potassium Iodate is used to prevent accumulation of radiation in the thyroid (right?).
How significant is preventing that to all the other harmfull effects of (fall out) radiation. Like I save my thyroid but at the same time my damaged blood cells are killing me?

That is correct, it blocks absorption of radioactive iodine by the thyroid, radiation being the only proven cause of thryoid cancer.

No, it's not a panacea for effects to other parts of the body, quite true. But to be affected as you say by depleted blood counts you'd need a very serious dose indeed as far as total exposure. Whereas a total rad exposure of say 50 rads would be hardly noticeable, and that'd be a serious industrial/power plant accident exposure, the long term effects of radioactive Iodine 131 are far more likely to guarantee primary thyroid cancer, or more likely even than that hypothyroid function. Kids are especially susceptible as their thyroids are not yet fully developed.

I'll post more radiation protection info as I come across it. Good question though, worthy of more research on my part.

They may not cover any area except thyroid, but that is still a big help especially for you people.

I am confused..you have to take this 12 hours b4 falout...in most places i would think fallout starts sooner than 12 hours...even with the major metro area 100 miles south going boom, and a 20mph wind north it would be about 5 hours for fallout..chances are wind moves a little quicker and the Boom would be a little closer..12 hours..is there a boost you could do for the short term between boom and fallout and the 12 hour before.

There is no "boost" I am aware of. ANY lead time is to your benefit. When it comes to radiation there is no magic pill per se, only preventive measures that present absorption of available nucleides.

By making a saturation dose of iodine available you limit the amount than can be absorbed that presents later. A 12 hour lead is ideal, not always realistic. Iodine 131 takes time to build up, but by saturating the thyroid with non-radioactive Iodine you prevent it from settling in the body. Any limitation of that ability is a benefit long term.

In order to protect against Radioactive Iodine '131'(GAS), elemental iodine has to be used.

To protect against other radioactive sources such as:

Gamma Rays

Alpha Particles

Beta Particles

individuals need to use shielding such as dense material (i.e., dirt, rock, buildings, lead, etc).

As for taking Potassium Iodate 12 hours prior to an event, the FDA recommends this. The FDA also makes manufactures place this warning on all labels. Most likely you will not be able to dose 12 hours prior to an event, this is why "Medical Corps" starts you out with a loading dose (be sure to follow the dosage exactly).

Excellent forum!!

Keep up the great work.
