View Full Version : Soluble Powder - vet antibiotic
Hi all. I just picked up two packages of Terramycin today at my local feed store. Finding antibiotics nowdays is not easy locally so I think I will order what I need online. Here is my question: Is the Terramycin(oxytetracycline HCI) good for anything? It is in the form of a soluble powder and the packet contains 10 grams of oxytetracycline HCI. The net weight is 6.4 oz(181.4 g) How much per dose? Should I get more? Should I get some good "fish" Tet? Thanks. Lrp

Oxytetracycline is a very good med, a more potent form of Tetracycline. I myself avoid the farm powder version because it is so difficult to figure the math for the dosing - it comes out to a decimal point so far as milligrams per unit of volume, but that does not make it less effective, just difficult to deal with.
You want to figure 400 milligrams per dose. As you will quickly discover the math isn't easy. I recall seeing it figured somewhere - I'll try to find it an post it.

I have some chlortetracycline powder is it as good as the oxytetracycline the dosage is easy to figure the package states one measuring teaspoon =200mg the package contains 10g total so the math is easy on it I just cant find any info on it compaired to the oxytetracycline
the merck veterinary manual lists them as equivalant. both are eliminated from your system quickly, both are effective for gram pos bacteria, and both are produced via natural processes (vs synthetic). Neithor has an advantage over other members of the tetracycline family, as some do, being more effective against other types of bacteria.
where did you get it?
