Mother fined for child's fear of dentist Thu May 22,12:19 PM ET
BERLIN (Reuters) - A German mother has been fined 100 euros (71.5 pounds) because her eight-year-old daughter refused to open her mouth for the school dentist.
"The dentist wanted to check her teeth, but the girl was afraid and refused to open her mouth. So the dentist reported her," a court spokesman in the central town of Wernigerode said on Thursday.
Local authorities imposed the fine on the mother and the court upheld that decision. The mother has agreed to pay the fine.
I do NOT get this. But I guess I'd best stop trying to convince my dentist to wear a dog training shock collar-he hurts me, I hurt him. Not looking forward to my first root canal... two weeks and counting down.

The concept of a parent being held accountable because a young child is afraid of the dentist is beyond ludicrous. Dentist, doctor, whomever. We're talking a stranger here in any case.
On the issue of the root canal though I've had 3 of them and they were no worse than a regular filling. Good attention to local anesthesia makes a world of difference. Can't say I'd recommend the oralmaxilliofacial surgeon who did my last wisdom tooth extraction though - that guy needs a comprehensive review of anesthesia administration.

I survive fillings, but only just. They knock me almost insensible with gas, then they swab my gums with generous amounts of the number, and only then do they jab me with the needles and I still go nuts. Don't know what it is about needles, but I feel them, even the little things they use for flu shots now. They hurt when they go in, and while they're in I feel the slightest movement, even the shot-giver's pulse. And it HURTS. And I throw up. And I faint. And I go into a beautiful case of shock. So if you're ever teaching a class and want to show the students how to recognize and treat shock, give me a call....
I just hope I'm done with wisdom teeth-they've pulled 6 so far. 5 and six were toothies too, not bone fragments.
And then there are the times I've been too terrified to go under for surgery. It doesn't help to hear the doc and the gas passer fighting-"I've already given a lethal dose, I can't give any more!" "Do it anyway!" Thanks guys.

:D LOL! - so is that how you got your name Faint?
I'll be sure to add you to my class resource list - that sounds like quite a show! :D

from my fear of needles, and partly from my fear of blood. I truly am the worst first responder on the planet. But I would make a great practice dummy for a class.
Now here's the funny part-my biological parents were medical people, at least my father was and my mother worked in his office, don't know if she had any medical training. She obviously was able to be around it though. I was adopted by another medical family, a surgeon and an RN. As a child I read medical texts and journals, spent a fair amount of time at the clinic and hospitals, and never knew exactly who in what sort of shape was pounding on the front door at home. Yet I've never been able to deal with needles or blood. Neither nature nor nuture seems to have made any difference in me.

Wonder if he went to the same dental school as the guy I went to? My Dad had a RCT, also. Said that the caine worked for him, too. My parents went to a dentist when I was a kid who didn't seem to know how to use a needle. He'd inject me, and then when I told him I was in pain, he'd look confused. He'd tell me there is no nerve in that tooth, and keep drilling.
