I mailed flotsam a package of CD masters 2-3 days ago. Have just moved and been offline for about a week. He should have them or be getting them in the next day or two. So it's in his ballpark as to when you guys get them.

hope you like um - I just burned what I had now and will start working on update disks.

I have received the CDs, and am gearing up to burn the sets.

A couple of issues:

1) Those who are still interested, please either PM or email me so I can verify the list Tangent sent.

2) How do you want the discs? I can make pretty sets (labels, holder, etc...) or just raw discs

3) Payment - Tangent put a lot of work into these, so I feel he deserves some level of compensation - I'll leave that up to you guys to decide. I will need something to cover mail costs/production (I figure raw costs for the discs will be about $1-2, mail about $2-3) If you want a "pretty" set, $2-3 more.

Let me know,please.

Sam, - I’ll PM you about the list. Some ppl don’t check in here a lot.

> 2) How do you want the discs? I can make pretty sets (labels, holder, etc...) or just raw discs

Interesting… what kind of label, etc.

> 3) Payment - Tangent put a lot of work into these, so I feel he deserves some level of compensation - I'll leave that up to you guys to decide. Actually, Sam is putting a lot into this too. It would take me 35-45min to burn a set, but perhaps he has better equipment. If people want to send a few extra dollars to compensate Sam for his duplicating and mailing time and me for my scanning time – that would be appreciated.

OK w/ you Sam? – 50/50 split on everything over material and mailing costs?

I'd also like to establish a "tangents xerox fund" type fund. If you earmark a couple of dollars for this - ALL that money will be placed on one of my copy cards for NLM or one of the other medical libraries I use. You must specify: X number of dollars for TXF or tangents copy fund or whatever for this to happen.

As a reminder – payment is a DONATION! This is a non-profit effort to share rather hard to come by research with fellow medics. It falls under “educational fair use”. We would like to break even and would be pleased if we got a little beer and Xerox money back for our efforts.

Ps: Sam – if we don’t break even, I’ll make up the difference to you in material costs.

A couple of notes on the distribution:

When I copied these I generally reduced them, if that would save money. Quality of print and type of font varied considerably. This made OCR gag. As to image quality, all documents are readable, however, you may have to enlarge or reduce the magnification to make some documents legible. Photographic quality is sometimes dismal, due to the Xerox process.

I know about the chapter on ceramics being corrupt in the “umchembook”. I’ll see if I can get a corrected copy for the update.

If anyone finds other problems, please let me know via PM (Private Message) and I’ll see if I can fix them for an update. There is no promise for support on these disks.

If anyone knows of good papers or sources for inclusion in the update, please let me know. Suggestions for other articles to include from this site would also be welcome.

I’ll try to figure out how to get the image size down in pdf files, also. That should save a lot of disks.

Enjoy,

-t

Thanks to both of you for all y our hard work. I know that this disk will have a place in my medical preparedness library.

I know it would help me out a lot if you guys would list a suggested donation for the disks. Adding up the amounts that you listed, I get about $8, and to add a couple bucks to the coffee and Xerox fund, round it up to $10?

Sound good? $10 per set? If we are feeling generous, $15?
Please let us know, as I want to be sure that we properly compensate you for your time in compiling this. It must have been an incredible load of work.

Two more things: 1) Where should we send the $? Do you have a PayPal address or would you prefer cash/MO? Address?

2) Is there any way we could have included a paper TOC or index? Something to say that this X book is on X disk, etc.?

Thanks again for all your hard work.

Stay Safe,
AGreyMan

Hi guys,

The Cd's are 1/2 way done (only 4 coasters so far, and I think that was due to problems w/ the media). I will include an envelope for donations - send what you see fit.

I project I will start mailing in about 1 week or so (just have to finish the burns & check the discs :) )

Whew!!! Discs are burned (all 160 of them :) ), I just want to check them all, and then I will start the mailing process.

The discs will be mailed in protective sleeves in a padded mailer via media mail. They will be crudely labeled (a la Sharpie marker) w/ MT Disc #. I will include a brief summary of what is on each disc.

If anyone wants/needs anything else, let me know.

I anticipate mailing the first batch on Tu/We of next week.

OK - I'm getting the message that there is enough interest to do another copy run.

I am NOT collecting addresses and such at this time. It's rather a item in the queue and another project is close to clearing my plate, sooo...

If/when you write, please tell me a little bit about yourself and your medical background. I'm probably going to split this off into a "CD-lite" for non-medics and not waste the disks/time on people that won't understand or be able to use some of the information and have a "full version" for people in the biz.

For those of you that allready have a set, I'm considering doing an update. I have additional electronic files and literally cubic feet of data that could be scanned in.

thanks,

How about putting the files up on a server someplace, like X-drive? That way people can download the files directly, and it's free.

The files are 7 CD's worth. Bit much for DL'ing. Not to mention not all are permissable for unlimited public access. Sort of a case of "If you are going to distribute them that freely we'd like some recompense."

Thats the beauty of xdrive and similar services - you don't have to tell everyone the password.

And, for those that have fast connections d/l'ing isn't an issue.

But, your project and your call.....

tangent
03-24-05, 10:34
I had a x-drive accnt once apon a time. they restricted quota's, increasing them slightly for each new person you brought in and I think there was an absolute max of 1 GB. After getting a few ppl to join I was up to a whopping 400 MB of storrage - not even half a CD worth.

now, if I could get distiller to work, I could get the size of many of the files I scanned cranked down, but files from other places are allready small. We are talking about 5-6 GB of material here... I know one place that you can set up a FTP server on, but it's a for pay service and buying that much extra disk storrage would be at least $50 a month in fees. Not practical.
