I haven't seen the new book, but I would suggest that you exercise
some care if using The Complete Medicinal Herbal. It has spots that
are somewhat worrisome, especially in applications and taxonomy.
Essentially, I would suggest that you check out what you are
going to do with references from solid refereed journals.

As this is an international group, I'll mention that the
British Herbal Compendium (Vol. I) edited by P.R. Bradley
has a good deal to recommend it (including a more recent
publication date - 1992 - than Lewis, et al).

Finally, our German friends have long had easy access to the
monographs produced by Commission E of the Bundesinstitut fuer
Arzneimittle und Medizinprodukt. They have recently become
available (in English translation) from the American Botanical
Council (as, fairly enough, "The German Commission E Monographs").
The Germans are arguably the leaders in phytopharmaceutical
research, so I suspect this may become a must have for serious
researchers (at $189, you have to be serious) and at least a
must look at (libraries are wonderful) for those with any interest
in the subject. Check out the web page on these:

http://www2.outer.net/herbalgram/commission_e.html

It includes a sample monograph.

(The ABC homepage is also worth visiting - they have some
useful reviews of other works, as well - there is a link to
it from the Commission E page)

(After giving such a glowing recommendation, I should mention I
have no affiliation whatsoever with the ABC or the BAM.)

My organization hasn't agreed with any of my opinions so far, and
I doubt they'll start now.
