affiliated? - I wouldn't exactly say "affiliated"... we have a special forces medic that's a regular poster here - when he's not in some remote part of the world or on training exercises somewhere (we never ask where, just when are you going to be back, sometimes...) and I posted something on their web site to the effect of "ya'all drop on by" - so I'm sure we have a few more readers from that community, that are lurkers at this time, unfortunately  Basically, we share an interest in austere medicine and anyone from any community with that interest is welcome here to learn and share information on topics related to that. Please check your politics and religious beliefs at the door.

this from a 1996 CONTOMS newsletter:

Special Operations Medical Association
The Special Operations Medical Association (SOMA) has contacted the CONTOMS program to advise us that their programs are open to CONTOMS program graduates and other interested parties. They have low cost, high quality training which meets the requirements of NREMT and AMA Category 1 CME credits.

SOMA is a nonprofit corporation. One of their goals has been to actively solicit input from all the military services as well from the law enforcement special operations community.

This year's annual meeting is from December 7 - 10, 1996, in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

A sample of conference topics include:

Civil-Military Innovative Readiness Training Programs

Medical Operations During Operation Restore Hope, Somalia

A Futurists View of Military Medicine

Hemorrhage Control in Trauma Patients

Biological Warfare in the Twentieth Century: Lessons From the Past, Challenges for the Future

Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Practicum

Operation Joint Endeavor: The CCTT Experience

Medical Response to the Khobar Towers Attack: The New Modular Approach in Action

Small Volume Resuscitation of Hypovolemic Shock

Investigating Scuba Diving Fatalities

Tactical Combat Casualty Care in Special Operations

Diagnosis and Treatment of Cutaneous Fungal Infections

I can verify that the address is still current, I don't know about those phone numbers.
I was given this number as a POC for possibly subscribing to their journal:
813-828-5442 (current Nov/Dec 2001)
OK - you motivated me, correct number, however this is for the "Journal of Special Operations Medicine", that is a military publication and is not associated with SOMA, which is a civilian organization and open to civilians, though almost everyone in SOMA is military and subscribes to this journal.

JSOM often contains articles written by SOMA members or about SOMA.

Back issues are available, except for the first issue. Inquiries for subscriptions and back issues should be e-mailed to:

jsom@socom.mil
attn: CPT Parsons
include:
what you are interested in.
your mailing address
a note about your background (medical and military, if any)

subscriptions and back issues MAY not be available to foreign nationals - doesn't hurt to ask... It might also depend on what country you are from.

As to SOMA itself, the outgoing treasurer is Lt. Col. Dale Hamilton. The above address and phone numbers may be his. Effective next month, the POC is:
Jay Servais
w) 615-399-5673
h) 615-443-1257

this is the person you should get in touch with if you are interested in attending the SOMA conferences or training’s. SOMA itself does not have any proceedings or other publications.

If you do a google search on "Special Operations Medical Association" you will come up with a number of pages. The most interesting of which are probably the CV's for various individuals, as these frequently have lists of articles these people have written. Many of these articles will be in the journal: "Military Medicine".

members on the board? - I believe we have 2, but I'll leave it up to them if they want to identify themselves.

- Professional feature medical articles (infectious disease

articles, "how to" stuff, fluid use in trauma, latest treatment regimens, etc.)

- Dental section

- "I was there" articles (a chance for medics/docs, etc. to tell

their stories) - Humor section (real life humorous stories from SOF

We're looking for contributors for the upcoming quarterly editions of the Journal of Special Operations Medicine. Please write a one to three page article on any of the above. Include your shoulder-and-above picture to accompany your article along with a brief bio. Also send photos if

available, with a brief description. We started offering continuing education hours in the Summer Edition of the journal, due out the first week of Sep. This will be an additional way to assist all medical personnel in accruing there needed hours. If you did not receive your Spring Edition please let me know so we can get it out in the mail to you. Thank you for all your help in making the JSOM a SOF success!

Very Respectfully,

Capt. Michelle DuGuay, USAFR NC
