I apologize if this thread is a repeat I did do a couple searches first does anyone know of any lab references which are focused on more basic and "by hand methods" perhaps for the third world clinic district hospital? First world texts seem to assume automation resources which wont be available WTSHTF. I seem to remember a list someone posted but cant seem to locate it.

There is a book titled A Medical Lab for Developing Countries, circa 1973 by Dr. Maurice King that seems to date to be the only definitive work on the subject. I have a copy in .pdf. Hard copies seem to be prohibitively expensive when they (rarely) surface. The such sale I can find reocrd of on eBay went for over $300 for a used copy.

There is also the 2003 WHO publication called Manual of Basic Techniques for Health Laboratories, 2nd ed. that I have found is quite good and very easy to follow. Used it quite a few times in Sri Lanka.

http://whqlibdoc.who.int/publications/2003/9241545305.pdf

Covers: intro to equipment, setting up a lab, basic lab procedures, crash courses in parasitology, bacteriology, and mycology, examination of urine, CSF, and blood, as well as more advanced immunological and seriological techniques.

I hope that is of some help.

Cheers,

Not a problem, glad I can help.

For malaria I have found two publications handy:

Basic Malaria Microscopy (1991)
http://whqlibdoc.who.int/publications/1991/9241544309.pdf

Bench Aids for the Diagnosis of Malaria Infections (2nd ed - 2000)
http://whqlibdoc.who.int/publications/2000/9241545240.pdf

One other publications from WHO that are worth a look at are:

Basic Laboratroy Procedures in Clinical Bacteriology (2nd ed - 2000)
http://whqlibdoc.who.int/publications/2003/9241545453.pdf

I hope that helps. Lab set up and procedures can be sometimes quite bothersome if you are not a lab tech by schooling (which I am not). These publications, along with the first one I mentioned seem to make things a little easier when I have had to put theory to practice in the developing world.

Cheers and good luck,
