View Full Version : tough x-ray
-I have been looking for field portable X-Ray equipment
-All are to bulky to travel through airports etc easily
The solution seems to be Equine X-ray units
-1-2 suitcase portable
-water and impact resistant (designed for barns and horses)
-DR technology for instant results, high resolution software
-dc rechargable or ac 110/220
-many models are FDA rated for humans as well
Anyone have any thoughts before I drop mad cash on one?

I recall threads here before you signed up on the topic - suggest you search old threads. I would also suggest you look into mil field hospital units - both in terms of what has been used, but also the surplus market. There is a gvmt auction site. Watch it long enough and basically everything shows up... sometimes at absolute bargain prices - even if you have to buy a pallet or 5 of stuff you don't want along with it to get what you do want.

My foray into this area is dated but at one time I was looking at the vet units you describe as possibly suitable for field use at a motocross track. As I recall the cost was about $12K at the time for a suitable unit that would do arms, legs, etc.
They can be had as you say ruggedized for field use, and are for more portable than anything in the way of a "portable" x-ray unit. The latter require smooth surfaces for rolling, are far costlier, and really aren't designed for anyplace outside of a hospital or clinic.

thanks tangent. The smallest military systems I am aware of are still hand truck sized units plus CR cartrages and readers. Have you worked with any more portable systems?
DR although more expensive than CR has a direct link to a laptop (less moving parts)
The equine units are generally hand held and less than 20lbs
I have a soft quote at $6-7000 used so far.
any vets or vet techs out there who have used these systems?

OMG! - that looks about as big as the portable units we'd take to the ER or ICU, back when I was candy striping years ago. (OK, they were a LITTLE bit bigger and used film cartridges, but still...)
I seem to recall seeing some athletic portable units basically designed for sports stadiums that IIRC were 1/2 to 1/3rd the size for sale used on E-BAY, but that was several years ago.
I'd say keep looking!

amd 5730 is light and fast but at 30mA a abdomen or chest x-ray on a larger person will be poor quality. spine is out of the question. up to 100kv is good. you can get the chest x-ray but detail is poor.
hf 8015 is limited by max 80kv and fixed 15mA
markV looks nice, will look into the image rendering software that is included and FDA approval for human use.
true the cmdr 1s is in a giant case. We can deploy it that way for fixed facility use. The stand is a nice accessory for frequent use. or we can strip it down and pack it in a water proof rucksack for our light and fast disaster response teams we are currently developing from the ground up. less than 70 lbs for airline travel (govt wt 70lbs, civiliam is 50lbs) Now about packing all the dang lead shirts ........ i think we will look into wearing them on the plane.... LOL
thanks for the feedback.
OK, so what are ideal/acceptable specs for a field portable unit?
I was really bummed when one of the techs on a boring night exclaimed "Hay, why don't we teach the volunteer to take x-rays!" and the shift supervisor veto'd it :(
anyway, I filed film, carried film cartridges and developed them - but I never learned how to take them and the settings... Transported pt's a lot too when I wasn't reading medical journals - we had a STACK! Ok, it was actually a box full.
