Tangent, thanks for the info posted, but most of the documentation is very hard to read or impossible altogether.

unfortunately we are dealing with scans of xeroxes that have been sampled at a fairly low dpi rate in order to keep file sizes small and allow posting at all.

The free acrobat reader allows you to zoom in making the text larger than 100% in size. It will often default to 70-80% in size making reading very difficult. Zooming in to at least 120% size is recommended and should make things legible.
