“Nearly eight months after Sept. 11, bioterrorism attacks are no longer at the forefront of most people's minds. But for a small group of Wake County officials who are quietly meeting to discuss stockpiling drugs,
the prospect of a worst-case scenario still lurks. The U.S. Public Health Service awarded Raleigh a $400,000 grant last year to establish a medical response plan for a local weapons-of-mass-destruction attack. Now the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is giving an additional $200,000 to develop an emergency pharmaceutical storage system. Drugs will be bought in bulk and kept at undisclosed locations around the county for use in an emergency. By the end of the year, the program should essentially be in place…. Around the nation, caches of pharmaceuticals will be earmarked for use in the event of nerve gas attacks, airborne assaults or poisoning of water and food supplies. These local drug banks will be building blocks of a more comprehensive national stockpile and are designed to tide over besieged communities
until drugs can be airlifted in from national warehouses. About 150 cities throughout the country are developing similar contingency plans.”
