1) sensitivity to hot, cold and/or food.
2) tapping on the tooth produces an involuntary pain reaction/grimace (into the gum - not side to side)
3) gentle steady pressure, pushing the tooth into the gum does not produce pain, releasing the pressure produces mild pain.
these signs generally mean infection is setting in. (Tx antibiotics)
root canals should be followed up w/ a crown, or you're asking for more problems.
a cracked tooth will need to be removed.
