First Presumptive Case of West Nile virus in an Iowan
-----------------------------------------------------
Today, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is reporting the first presumptive positive case of human West Nile virus infection in Iowa. The case is a 50 year old male from Lee County, who was hospitalized, but has been released. The patient likely became infected here in Iowa.

Specimens have been sent to the CDC for confirmatory testing, which will take about a week. The IDPH is not aware of any other suspect human cases at this time.

In addition to this one human case, 89 birds, 35 horses, and 3 sentinel chickens (all the chickens are from Scott County) have tested positive for West Nile virus. In total, activity has been reported in 77 of Iowa's 99 counties.

The report of this case will likely generate additional calls and
concerns from the public. To help answer some of these questions, please access our web site <http://www.idph.state.ia.us> for information on West Nile
virus, including a map of activity in the state.
